Dry cleaning isn’t alchemy. There’s no magical dry cleaning box filled with dry cleaning rays to clean clothes. If only! Dry cleaning is a sophisticated process to cleanse garments and textiles with solvents that contain very little water … hence the term ‘dry.’
.
Dry cleaning machines are similar to washing machines. A large tumbling basket facilitates the cleaning process. Garments are placed in this basket, which is partially filled with solvent, and tumbled to drop through the solvent. This agitation and the flushing action of the solvent do most of the cleaning.
.
The solvents most widely used are perchloroethylene and hydrocarbon. The most common solution is about 98% pure solvent, 1% water, and 1% sizings and detergents. What you really have to watch out for are impurities. If the solution is not distilled and cleansed properly, you may wind up cleaning with a solution containing OPB (other people’s bacteria). Gross!
.
Ever get back clothes that smell like chemicals?
.
Slightly dingy?
.
Remaining residue?
.
Might be time to find a new cleaner that knows how to maintain their cleaning solution!
